Hurricane Sandy

The date, October 29th has never meant more than it does now.  It was the day that Hurricane Sandy swept through NJ like a bat outta hell.  I am always one of those people who, when weather forecasts are coming (like a big snow storm for example) I disregard them and figure it's just nothing.  So, like usual, I thought people were gearing up for just a little rain.  I was extrememly thrown off when I got a call telling me that my office was closed on Monday, before anything really happened.  To see what was really going on down at our beloved shore, we decided to take a ride down Sunday morning.  Luckily, one of our favorite little spots, the Scone Pony, was still open!  We stocked up!!!
We drove up to Spring Lake, this is where I used to go back in the day.  Before kiddos, cause now that the girls are involved, we tend to hit up Asbury Park.  It's got that cute spray park and food on the boardwalk, plus it's close!  So, we just drove right up to Spring Lake to check out the ocean.  The waves weren't big but the water was super choppy.
They already had the sand built up to try and stop the water from rising too far up.  It was SUPER WINDY too.  The sand was whipping around and it was COLD!
Daddy with his girls, getting ready to run back to the car.
Mya and I ran back out to check it out again.  Love this muffin and she was loving the beach.  It's really one of our favorite places.  We are there all summer long and will be back next summer, for sure.
 fam a lam shot.
 haha at Mya's face.
So Monday came and the rain wasn't steady.  I was expecting alot more rain, thank god we didn't get the rain though.  The wind was insane!  Just listening from inside was scaring the crap out of me.  Along with all the blue lights that were lighting up the sky from the transformers blowing.  It was just wack!  I made Ry change the girls room around so that the crib was as far away from the window as possible.  I was so nervous sleeping upstairs, Mya always sleeps in our bed, Ash never does, just won't sleep.  So she was in her room and Mya was with us.  We woke up Tuesday morning, luckily with power.  We decided to head out to see some damage.  It was heartbreaking and really just unreal.  The amount of trees down, the sidewalks that came up with them, the wires down EVERYWHERE.  NOTHING was open cause there was no power.   No traffic lights were working, NOTHING!  It was really weird to drive around and see it all.
Here's New Brunswick, by the park.  HUGE telephone pole down.
The ads up on the new building by the train station, all ripped down.
The little ging checking it all out.
Highland Park, lots of trees down.  Like BIG ASS TREES!
It was just unreal to see those sidewalks pulled up.
Trees lying on homes, so so sad.
 completely uprooted.
 Johnson Park is a disaster.
Trees just laying on power lines, scary.
I felt like all we did for a week straight was watch the news.  We had people in and out of our house, cause we luckily had power.  We were feeding people, warming people, letting people charge phones, whatever.  We were happy to have our friends and family in.  We were so fortunate to not have lost anything.  I was out of work for 8.5 days, didn't go back till the afternoon on Thursday, Nov 8th.  It was so bizarre.  Even when I did go back, my office was still running on a generator.  Generators were no where to be found in NJ, either was gas.  If you didn't fill up before the storm, you were either waiting on a 2 hour line (at the minimum) or just not driving anywhere.  The gas lines were just freaking weird and had me thinking the most random things.  It felt like the day after tomorrow type ish.
Here are some of the pics I saw from down the shore area.  Just disasterous and so so sad.
 Seaside boardwalk
 boats in LBI, crazy.

Cape May, the amount of sand that was blown into the streets was just unreal.

Some people lost their homes, some lost family.  Such a sad day in NJ.  However, we will rebuild and people have already started helping to do so.  WE WILL REBUILD, Jersey Strong.  I've never felt stronger about where I'm from.
